Ferdinand defends Solskjaer after United’s FA Cup draw vs Wolves

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has supported manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the Red Devils’ frustrating 0-0 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the FA Cup. Both teams made multiple changes to the starting lineup for the Cup tie but the Red Devils were certainly the less efficient on the attack as they failed to muster a single shot on target.

As a result, there has already been widespread criticism from a number of fans over the outcome of the game but Ferdinand has defended his former teammate by stating that the inconsistency will remain present with a young squad at Solskjaer’s disposal, he told: “It was a better second half but both teams lacked quality in the final third especially. They huffed and puffed until the got to the final third, there wasn’t any quality into the box or into either front man for us to see a bit of magic. You never came off your seat once in the whole game. Not super clearly yet. I still think it’s a work in progress, the problem has been the inconsistency.”
United had a forgettable game at the Molineux as they failed to register a shot on target for the first time in a domestic competition in five years. Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata both came close to finding the net but the luck was certainly not on United’s side with the former managing to find the woodwork with a deflected shot. Mata, meanwhile, managed to deceive John Ruddy with a free-kick towards the far post but there was not sufficient curl on the shot, which missed the target.

Due to the result, United now have a replay later in the month and that does not make for good reading, particularly with the congested run of fixtures. The Red Devils have a couple of League Cup semi-final games against Manchester City to contend this month and aside from this, they have league encounters against Norwich City, Liverpool, and Burnley.
